6 Easy Things You Can Do TODAY To Improve Your Writing
Writing a book can be overwhelming, even for published authors. Organising and putting your thoughts down on paper for months at a time takes a lot of mental discipline.
While I do write every day, usually for three of four hours, sometimes the thought of battling with an 80,000 word manuscript is enough to send me back to bed! On those days, I usually need something to get me in the right frame of mind.
In this blog post, I’ve compiled 6 things I do to get creativity going:
1. Complete a daily writing prompt
A ten-minute writing prompt is an excellent way to start your writing day and will get the wheels of your mind turning. If you’re serious about writing a book, make this a daily habit for massive results. You can start today with my FREE 30 Days Of Writing Prompts.
2. Join a writing community
It’s a lonely job being an author so a supportive writing community can be hugely helpful. I’m part of several and always like to spend some time each week connecting with other writers. Whether it’s online or in-person, a community is invaluable.
3. Read a book about writing
Learning about the craft is a huge part of any author's journey. Some of my favourites have included Stephen King’s Memoir on Writing and Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic. You can see more of my recommendations in my blog post 15 Books To Inspire Every Author. Pick one and commit to a chapter a day, applying what you’ve learnt in your next writing session.
4. Write a letter (the old-fashioned way)
When was the last time you wrote on some beautiful writing paper? This is such a relaxing way to write, slowing you down and allowing you to enjoy the experience. Plus, you’ll make someone very happy when they receive it.
5. Edit a short piece of text
The editing and writing processes use separate areas of the brain. If you’re feeling creatively wrung out, try editing a short piece of text to see how you can improve it.
6. Take a free online masterclass
There are lots of short, free classes online offering writing tips and inspiration, especially since the pandemic forced many of us to learn online. Do a quick Google search or access my free online masterclass here to learn five techniques to help you write your book.
